Toddler Playroom Must-Haves: Creating a Safer Space for Your Little One

As a mom, my toddler’s safety is always one of my biggest priorities.

When we started setting up his playroom, I wanted to make the space as toddler-friendly as possible…
Somewhere he could play, explore, and roam around while giving me a little more peace of mind.

So, I did a lot of research.
I looked into different ways to make his playroom safer, tried different products, and figured out what actually worked well for us.

Ultimately, these are the things I found the most beneficial and that fit seamlessly into our playroom.

I’m sharing everything from wall padding and floor padding to some of the little safety additions in between.

I’ve also included a few of our favorite soft play toys that my toddler absolutely loves and that keep him busy while he plays and explores.

My goal isn’t to create a completely “toddler-proof” room because let’s be honest… toddlers will always find a way to surprise us!

The goal is to create a space that feels safer, comfortable, and made with them in mind.

Wall Padding:

Why I Chose Wall Padding

Our toddler can be a bit.. careless. 😂
He loves to run, and sometimes he’s moving so fast that he’s not exactly looking where he’s going.

Because of that, I decided adding some padding to the walls would give me a little extra peace of mind while he’s playing.

I looked at a lot of wall-padding options, but most of what I found was way out of our budget—and some wouldn’t even cover a third of the wall for the price.

So, I found an alternative that has worked really well for us: floor mats!

Instead of traditional wall padding, I purchased these padded floor mats and used them along the lower portion of the wall. They’re a great height for our toddler and give us the extra padding I was looking for without the cost of traditional wall-padding systems.

Another reason I love this option is that the mats can still be used later! Once we no longer need them on the walls, we can take them down and use them as regular floor padding, play mats, or even exercise mats.

Always follow the mat and adhesive manufacturers’ instructions. Our setup is simply what has worked for our playroom, and you’ll want to make sure anything placed on the wall is appropriately secured for your own space.

Floor Padding

We actually use two different types of floor padding in our playroom.

1. Our Cloud-Like Play Mat

First, we have a super soft, cloud-like mat that we’ve actually had since he was an infant. We decided to keep using it in his playroom because it gives him a soft, comfortable place to sit, play, and move around.

I especially love having the extra padding underneath him during everyday toddler play.

2. House of Noa Tumbling Mat

We also have a House of Noa tumbling mat, and I love this one because the padding is nice and thick.

It gives him a designated area where he can climb, tumble, and practice his balance while still having a padded surface underneath him. And because toddlers are constantly moving, climbing, and testing what their little bodies can do, this has been such a great addition to his playroom.

Toy Storage

We actually use two different types of toy storage, too.

1. Soft Toy Storage

For some of his toys, I love using super soft storage bins. There aren’t hard furniture edges to worry about, and if he happens to tumble into one while he’s playing, he has a much softer surface there.

They’re also easy for him to access when he wants to grab his own toys.

2. Larger Toy Storage

We also have a larger storage option for the toys that need a little more space.

It isn’t a traditional hard piece of furniture, but it gives us more storage and works really well for our toy rotation. I can keep some toys put away and switch them out instead of having everything in the playroom at once.

The one we have in the room is no longer available, but here is the one we use in the living room – does the same job and matches all rooms :)

Soft Toddler Couch

Our toddler couch is another favorite!

We got him this adorable dinosaur one. He can sit on it to play or relax, and it unfolds when he wants more room to stretch out.

I love having something in the room that’s made for his size and gives him his own little comfortable spot.

Soft Ball Pit

The ball pit gets a LOT of use in our house.

I specifically wanted a soft ball pit because he’s constantly climbing in and out of it. The sides are soft and flexible, making it a great option for our playroom setup.

And, of course, you need plenty of balls to fill it!

Soft Building Blocks

These are another playroom favorite.

Instead of only having hard building blocks, we also have soft blocks that he can stack, knock over, climb around, and build with.

I especially like them for active play because toddlers don’t exactly sit perfectly still while they build. 😂 Having soft blocks gives him another way to build and play without adding more hard toys to the room.

Foldable Play Tunnel

This one is so simple, but he LOVES it.

We have a foldable play tunnel that he can crawl through, hide in, and incorporate into whatever he happens to be playing that day.

And one of my favorite parts as a mom? It folds up!

When we need more room, I can easily fold it down and store it away without having another huge toy permanently taking up space in the playroom.

Creating a Space That Works for Your Little One

At the end of the day, toddlers are going to be toddlers. They’re going to run, climb, tumble, explore, and somehow find things we never even thought they would get into. 😂

For us, the goal wasn’t to create a perfectly “toddler-proof” room. It was simply to create a space where our little one could play, explore, and be a toddler while giving us a little more peace of mind.

From adding extra padding to the walls and floors to choosing softer toys and furniture, these little changes have made his playroom work so much better for our family. And most importantly, he absolutely loves spending time in there!

Of course, every toddler and every home is different. Take what works for your family, skip what doesn’t, and create a space that makes sense for your little one.
